Beauty On Syn-ake Venom 'A safer Alternative to Botox(tm)'
The Beauty section is confronting, with a story on the new Botox – snake venom! I find it perplexing that we are all so anti-smoking (i.e. inhaling toxins) yet so willing to inject or apply them to our faces. What the? According to the piece, it's the poison's paralysing effect that skin-care companies such as Sonya Dakar, Z. Bigatti and Peter Thomas Roth hope to re-create. Apparently "one female Academy-Award-winning, macrobiotic-eating yoga devotee" stocks up on Dakar's venom-based UltraLuxe-9 cream. A Swiss company, Pentapharm, which owns a 10,000-species snake farm, claims its chemical, called syn-ake, penetrates skin to block the nerve receptors that stimulate muscle movement.
